Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my purchase home from your mattress store?
Bringing your truck or trailer and hauling it yourself allows you to have your mattress set, bedroom furniture or other store-bought merchandise when you want it. The Sleep Shop of Appleton also offers a delivery service within the Fox River Valley area of Northeast Wisconsin. See store for details.

What makes The Sleep Shop’s mattresses different from name brands?
Quality and price. We take great pride in manufacturing top-quality mattresses at factory-direct prices. We are not a mattress factory outlet. When you walk in our front door, you are not only in the showroom, you are also in the factory. Another thing that sets us apart is that we still manufacture flip-able (two-sided) mattresses – which, with proper care, ensure the longest possible life for your mattress.

How long does a bed mattress last?
Sleep surveys show that quality, not quantity, is most important to a great night’s sleep. If you are not waking up rested, it may be the fault of your mattress. The average life of mattresses of all sizes is 12 to 15 years, but your best years are your first 8 to 10.

What size mattress should I purchase?
It all depends on your size and comfort needs. For a younger child, a twin mattress (38" x 75") or full mattress (53" x 75") are most popular. For adult couples, the mattress size that gives you the most freedom of movement is the best choice. Most couples select a queen mattress (60" x 80") or a king mattress (76" x 80"). Additionally, we can custom-make any size of mattress and box spring.

Years ago there were a lot of waterbed stores in the Fox Valley. What happened to all of them?
After being on the market for about 10 years, people found that they did not get adequate back support from waterbeds. We offer waterbed conversion mattresses to give you a more comfortable option with a softer feel while still using your conventional waterbed frame.

What is comfort foam?
Comfort or memory foam is a viscoelastic, open-celled, temperature- and weight-sensitive material originally developed for NASA in the 1970s. Comfort foam reacts to the body’s temperature and adjusts to your exact shape. We use this foam in two ways: as a solid mattress or as a pillow topper over a traditional innerspring mattress. This gives firm mattress support with a softer feel.

Why are so many manufacturers going to a no-flip style mattress?
Height and weight. Ten years ago, the average mattress size was 8 to 10 inches thick. Now, with the popularity of pillowtop mattresses, the thickness ranges between 10 to 14 inches. By making a no-flip mattress, only one side of the mattress is padded, which decreases the height. Unfortunately, these types of mattresses don’t last as long because you can’t turn them over and use the opposite side. That’s why The Sleep Shop of Appleton still pads our mattresses on both sides to ensure the longest possible life.  (Of course, if you would prefer a no-flip mattress, we will build you one upon request!)

How often should I rotate my bed mattress?
Every two months. We are heavier between our shoulders and seat, putting more wear in that area of the bed. By flipping and rotating your bed mattress, you get fewer body impressions, which results in a more comfortable mattress over a longer period of time.

Why don’t you run mattress sales?
At our mattress store, we mark our products at a factory-to-you price, so there is no need to run a sale. You cannot purchase a better quality mattress or box spring anywhere. We do, however, run special promotions with our mismatched and discontinued cover mattress sets, which allows us to use up our surplus cover material and pass the savings on to you.
